Continuing a Legacy of Quality and Innovation
The story of Potter’s Gold begins with the legacy of a legend in the industry – “the Dirt Man.” Hailing from Madison, Wisconsin, during the vibrant era of the late 60s and early 70s, his journey into the world of plants started not as a mere curiosity but as a profound passion. Armed with a Bachelor’s Degree in horticulture, he embarked on a career that would shape the landscape of potting soils forever.
After honing his skills as a grower at a prestigious wholesale nursery, specializing in container substrates, plant culture, and propagation techniques, the Dirt Man’s expertise flourished. His insatiable curiosity led him to delve deeper into the realms of soil science, culminating in the pursuit of a Master’s degree.
Thus began his lifelong mission – to craft growing media with unparalleled quality and performance. For decades, the Dirt Man collaborated with a renowned commercial blending facility, meticulously sourcing components and formulating custom soil recipes. His dedication knew no bounds as he provided unwavering support to greenhouse and nursery clients across the Midwest.
Now, Potter’s Gold proudly carries forward this rich tradition of excellence. We haven’t altered the formula; we’ve embraced it, ensuring that every batch of our soil embodies the same integrity and expertise that the Dirt Man instilled. Our commitment to quality remains unwavering, just as it did under his stewardship.

“Potter’s Gold is light by design, and many growers and store owners that I talked with in early development indicated a need to amend popular retail soils with extra perlite. Those that have time and interest in batching their own would likely benefit from a similarly high level of porosity, as it’s a prerequisite for optimal root health and nutrient update. There’s a trade off here with water-holding capacity, but I’m of the belief that root health comes first.”
